What Is A Galaxy?
A galaxy is made up of stars, planets, moons, comets, asteroids, clouds of gas and dust, and other objects. It’s also called a star system.
The word “galaxy” comes from ancient Greek, “galaxias kyklos”, meaning “milky circle (or vault”.
Astronomers thought all stars were part of a single giant cloud of matter, but most stars were too far away to be connected.
So they named each group of stars after its nearest neighbor, the Milky Way.
Galaxies are formed when large amounts of matter clump together. What eventually becomes a galaxy starts out as separate “objects”.
Scientists believe that before a galaxy becomes a galaxy, it is a collection of separate clouds made out of stars and dust.
When these clouds pass by one another, gravity pulls them together irrevocably, creating larger celestial bodies, and just like that, the galaxy is born.
Why Are Galaxies Important?
Galaxies are essential because they contain almost everything else in the universe. Stars, planets, moons, and comets are all part of a galaxy.
Even black holes are found inside galaxies! And if you want to know how big the universe is, you need to know where the galaxies are located.
Is There Life On Other Galaxies?
Scientists think so.
Some believe that life may exist on planets orbiting distant stars; if true, this would mean that life could exist anywhere in the universe!
However, the chances of humans ever making contact with extraterrestrial life are very small, as the theoretical distance between us and other intelligent life is almost unfathomable.
How Many Galaxies Are There?

That’s because only 1/1000th of the sky has been explored yet. So what do scientists think about the total number of galaxies?
They agree that the universe is expanding, which means that space itself is getting bigger. As space gets bigger, it should hold more galaxies.
Therefore, scientists think that the total number of galaxies will increase over time.
What Galaxies Have We Discovered?
Astronomers have discovered thousands of galaxies since the 1800s. But the first galaxy ever found wasn’t a galaxy at all.
It was just an object that looked like a fuzzy blob. Astronomer William Herschel discovered it in 1783, and he called it the nebula.
He didn’t realize that it was a new type of astronomical object.
In 1885, astronomer Edwin Hubble used a telescope to study the nebulae and noticed that some had patterns.
They were moving apart from one another. So he decided that they must be separate galaxies.
In 1929, American astronomer Vesto Slipher measured the speed of light using his telescope.
He found that the speed of light was constant no matter how fast or slow the star was traveling.
This helped to uncover that the stars weren’t moving toward Earth, but rather away from us.
Because of this discovery, scientists started calling the objects we see today galaxies.
Arguably, the Milky Way is the most famous galaxy. It contains hundreds of billions of stars.
The Milky Way also has millions of other smaller galaxies!
In fact, astronomers say that the visible universe is made up of at least 100 billion galaxies.
The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way. It’s 2 million light-years away.
The Large Magellanic Cloud is a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. It’s 400,000 light-years away.
Scientists think that it might once have been connected to the Milky Way.
The Small Magellanic Cloud is another small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. It’s 160,000 light-years from earth.
Are Galaxies Dangerous?
For the most part, galaxies aren’t dangerous.
In fact, there have been numerous collisions between the Milky Way and other dwarf galaxies, and it doesn’t impact us in any way.
A major galactic collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda is predicted in about 5 billion years, and even that wouldn’t have too much effect on the solar system.
Luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you look at it), we won’t be around to deal with possible consequences, as the Earth’s surface will have become too hot for liquid water, and all life as we currently know it will have expired.
Cheery thought, I know.
But, as minor as galactic collisions have been in recent history, the proximity of galaxies isn’t completely asymptomatic.
If a nearby galaxy passes too close to Earth, it can disturb the atmosphere. When this happens, meteors burn up faster than average.
And if the meteor burns up quickly enough, it becomes a shooting star.
Are Galaxies Visible From Earth?
Yes! You can see galaxies right now. All you need is a good pair of binoculars or a telescope.
Binoculars are cheap and easy to use; however, telescopes are a little more expensive and complicated.

It can be hard to spot galaxies from the earth, but it’s not impossible. The most visible galaxy from the earth is our own Milky Way.
You can tell if you’re looking at the Milky Way or not because it looks like a band of lights.
If you don’t know what a galaxy looks like, you can still learn about them.
Just open up any book on astronomy and flip through the pages until you find a picture of a galaxy.
Then you’ll know which one you’re seeing.
How Do We Know That There Are Other Galaxies Out There?
Astronomers have known about galaxies since ancient times.
However, in the 1600s, Galileo Galilei discovered that planets travel around the Sun and that these planets must be orbiting other bodies.
In 1610, Johannes Kepler used math to figure out that all the planets orbit the Sun in elliptical orbits.
This means that the planets never get closer together or farther apart. They just circle around the Sun.
In 1801, Sir William Herschel found that some objects were moving very fast. He called these objects “stars.”
Astronomers soon learned that the stars are much larger than planets.
In the 1800s, astronomers began using telescopes to study the universe.
By studying how bright objects moved against the background of darkness, they could determine whether an object was a planet or a star.
In the 1900s, scientists figured out that the universe is expanding.
This meant that everything we see today has been traveling away from us for billions of years.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was launched into space in 1990 and helped scientists discover new galaxies.
Today, we know hundreds of millions of galaxies in the universe. Some of these galaxies contain stars similar to our own.
Others are so far away that their light takes billions of years to reach us.
Galaxies are a fascinating part of our solar system.
Even though they are huge distances away, they play an essential role in our lives. In fact, they help keep the universe balanced!
We’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to learning about galaxies, making the future an inspiring prospect.
Although we don’t know exactly how many galaxies are out there, there are probably more than we could ever imagine!
