Celestron 127EQ Review
The Celestron 127EQ is a great beginner telescope, but there are some other things that you will need to know about its performance before you go ahead and buy it.
This telescope, in particular, is a Newtonian reflector, as are many of the modern reflector telescopes. This means that in order to work, it uses mirrors to gather and reflect the light being produced by an object so that you can view it.
These types of telescopes are typically less expensive to make than those with glass lenses, which is a great plus for this telescope as it brings the overall cost down. These types of telescopes are also able to provide more value when you look at the aperture that they use.
The 127mm aperture is on the high end in terms of the largest apertures that you will find with a beginner telescope. This is an ideal size for those who don’t have much experience with using telescopes, and it will be more than enough to get you started.
This level of the aperture will allow you to view detailed close-up images of the moon and other brighter planets, stars, and nebulae.
Paired with this great aperture is excellent quality optics that will also aid you in your search. All of the optical components are made from glass that has been coated with high transmission aluminum, which means that it will provide you with extra clarity and brightness.
However, to be at the lower price that it is, other compromises had to be made in order to lower the overall cost. This is reflected in the fact that a spherical mirror has been used as opposed to a parabolic mirror.
The deviation of light rays is more common with a spherical mirror, but this doesn’t always cause an issue. This telescope does feature an erect image diagonal that helps to prevent this, which can also lower the chances of this happening even further.
The images that you are provided with may sometimes be slightly distorted, but it won’t be so noticeable that it damages your overall stargazing experience.
In fact, for those that have never used a telescope before, it probably wouldn’t even be significant enough for you to notice. You will still be able to view all the wonders of the sky without any real problems.
As with all reflector telescopes, you will need to realign the mirrors in order to get the maximum use from this telescope. Unfortunately, the company itself does not give you much information on how to do so, which can make the process slightly more complex if you are unsure of what to do.
Thankfully, there are lots of informational and tutorial videos online that you can look for, and they will show you what you need to do. It won’t be long before you can do it on your own; it just takes a little bit of getting used to first.
The thing that you are probably wondering the most about is how much you will be able to see with this telescope, and thankfully the answer is a lot.
Celestron has stated that this scope will actually allow you to see up to 329 times more light than you would be able to see with the naked eye. The eyepiece that is used in conjunction with this telescope will focus on this light and use it to your advantage to help you see more.
There is a five-inch mirror that, when paired with the 4mm eyepiece, can offer magnification as high as 250X. It can go beyond this level, but you would need a better eyepiece in order to do so.
There is an additional 20mm eyepiece that has a magnification level of 50X, and when you use it with the 3X Barlow, it can increase this level to 150X.
